- Housing costs in Vancouver can feel out of reach for families. While Abbotsford offers more affordable real estate options and a slower-paced lifestyle.
- You can buy a home in Abbotsford for the same cost as a townhome in Vancouver. You get a better bang for your buck when moving to Abbotsford.
- Moving from Vancouver to Abbotsford means you can finally afford a home with a backyard. All while STILL saving money on monthly expenses.
- Transportation expenses and day-to-day costs, such as groceries, gas and utilities, are generally more expensive in Vancouver.
The cost of living in Abbotsford BC vs the cost of living in Vancouver BC is one of the main reasons I live in Abbotsford today.
When I lived in Vancouver, I was renting an apartment with 2 other people while in Abbotsford I could have lived in a 1-bedroom unit for the same price. Your money simply just goes further in Abbotsford.

Personally, I prefer to live where there’s less crowds, congestion and craziness… so I choose Abbotsford. It doesn’t have much of a nightlife and I do have to commute to get to major events, but I rarely go out at night or go to major events.

Overall, Abbotsford is a more family friendly city but because Vancouver is so big that there are many neighborhoods for families to thrive in. I think it would be more important for you to look at the cost of raising a family in both cities.

Transportation and Accessibility
- Vancouver’s SkyTrain and extensive bus network make getting around convenient, while Abbotsford is more car dependent.
- Living in Abbotsford means factoring in longer commutes if you work in Vancouver.
- If you rely on transit, Vancouver is a better option. Abbotsford transit is weak in comparison BUT a new bus exchange just opened so there can be more frequent stops and better connectivity in the city. I do think this will help but it’s to early to say how effective this will be.
I hate driving around Vancouver when it’s busy, so Abbotsford is perfect for me. There’s less traffic and you can drive to anywhere you need in the city in no more than 20 minutes.
